Little Angels with Fur: Slow Travel with the Fairy Dog Mother

Travel & Adventure
Pet Sitting • Slow Travel • Affordable House Sitting • Writer on the Road
🐾 There are many ways to travel.
Some people collect airline miles. Some chase faraway destinations. I tend to follow paw prints.
Over the years, one of the unexpected joys of my life has been caring for other people’s animals while they travel. Somewhere along the way—without ever planning it—I became the fairy dogmother within my circle of friends.
Pets are little angels with fur, and loving them has shaped how I move through the world.
As a writer, musician, and van-dwelling creative, I don’t always travel far — but I travel deeply. Pet sitting has become my version of slow travel: stepping gently into someone else’s daily rhythm while keeping their animals safe, calm, and loved until they return home.
🦴 Keeping Their World Steady
Whenever possible, I arrive early so pets and humans feel comfortable before departure day. We walk through routines together—favorite walks, feeding rituals, medications, and all the little details that matter.
Animals don’t understand vacations. They understand familiarity.
My role is simply to keep their world steady.
When their humans return, nothing feels disrupted — only warmly cared for.
A quiet summer afternoon in San Francisco’s Richmond District turns into a cozy moment of connection, care, and companionship. After a long walk, a shared lunch, and a peaceful nap, Lou the dog and Napkin the kitty remind us that pet sitting is more than a job — it’s trust, love, and presence. Pets truly are angels with fur… and here’s proof.

🍋 The Nomad Kitchen
One of the hidden joys of pet sitting is cooking or baking in new kitchens.
Friends often leave notes asking me to enjoy whatever fresh ingredients remain—lemons from the garden, ripe avocados, herbs ready to be picked. Those moments inspire recipes that often end up featured on my food blog here at tretaylor.com.
I also have a small tradition.
When you come home, there’s usually a surprise waiting: a baked treat, something sweet in the fridge, a clean, peaceful home, and happy pets ready to greet you.
It’s my way of saying thank you for trusting me with your world.
Cupcakes filled with luscious creamy filling are fun surprises. upon your return.
🐓 From City Dogs to Chickens
Over the years I’ve cared for an unforgettable mix of personalities:
🐕 beloved city dogs strolling San Francisco neighborhoods
🐱 wise cats supervising creative workdays
🐓 backyard chickens who turned one holiday season into a farm adventure
🐾 playful dog circles gathering with friends and music
Some animals I’ve cared for from puppyhood through their entire lives—a privilege I never take lightly.
🚐 Slow Travel, Going Forward
As this next chapter unfolds, I’m traveling more intentionally—exploring new towns, reconnecting with friends, discovering music communities, and continuing creative projects that thrive when life slows down. I’m writing, designing and learning all kinds of new ai tools, and finding my voice.
Pet and house sitting allows me to explore the world gently while keeping animals comfortable in the place they love most: home.
Certain seasons will always bring me back to the Bay Area—mostly because I miss the pets who have become family.
