Yesterday I marched through Pacifica’s Fog Fest parade dressed as a pirate and fed people apple cinnamon, Rum Roses soaked in spiced rum syrup. Bleep the Tattoo made his debut. People laughed, ate, and asked for the recipe. I came home aching, covered in glitter, and grateful for every minute of it.

Today I looked at the pan of roses and had what I can only call a time slip.

Rum Roses half way done…. drooool.

For a moment, I was older and standing at the sink in a new, creative, recycled modern kitchen I had designed. Outside the window were gardens, animals, and people arriving for the special event. I smelled apples and sweet cinnamon bread baking and looked down and saw the Rum Roses. I then saw my reflection in the glass and felt proud of the woman looking back. I did it. We did it, I thought.

Was it a glimpse of my future, or a beautiful possibility my mind let me visit? I don’t know. I’ve learned to cosmic surf: hold the vision gently, stay curious, and leave room to be wowed by what life can become.

I’m Tré Taylor: part foodie pirate, part free-range jazz gypsy, part overthinking mystic, part clown brain. I sing jazz, write, love to cook, and have found new ways to play with video, music, and stories. For a long time, I hid parts of myself because I felt misunderstood. These days, I’m letting them all come to the party.

I’ve survived years when I wondered whether I would make it. I’ve had surgeries that changed my life, lost nearly 200 pounds, and learned to accept help when I needed it. I know how much it matters when somebody shows up for you. That’s part of why I want to take this gratitude tour on the road: to feed people, thank people, make some music, and pass that kindness along.

Deliciously Fun Life is the name of the show I’m building, but it’s also a state of mind. You can begin again. You can learn a new way to cope, try a new art form, find people who feel safe, or give the playful part of yourself another chance. I’m still learning how to do all of that. I’d love some company.

I want to meet the musicians with happy dogs and generous gardens, the artists who know how to fix an engine, the doctors who weld, the storytellers who cook, and the wonderfully curious people who have never fit neatly into one box.

I want good food we might grow ourselves, old fashioned hospitality, new ideas, and enough peace to enjoy one another. I want a love story with laughter in it, too.

And yes, I want epic grilled cheese competitions. If you come to one, you may have to sing for your supper or tell Bleep a joke. A song about grilled cheese would put you straight into contention.

That kitchen I saw may be years away. For now, I have a pan of Rum Roses, two more days of lovely Fairy Pet Mother sitting to rest, and a future I’m excited to work toward. That feels pretty good.
