Pacifica has dogs who surf.
The World Dog Surfing Championships return to beautiful Linda Mar Beach on Saturday, August 1, 2026, and your local Fairy Pet Mother plans to be there—with coffee in hand, sand in her shoes and absolutely no intention of behaving normally.
This is one of my favorite Pacifica traditions.
I have missed the last couple of championships because I was away caring for other people’s beloved pets, but I have continued promoting the event because it is simply too joyful not to share.
This year, I do not have a pet-sitting assignment keeping me away.
The Fairy Pet Mother is free.

World Dog Surfing Championships
📅 Saturday, August 1, 2026
🕘 9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
📍 Linda Mar Beach, Pacifica, California
🎟️ Free for spectators
Surfing exhibitions and competition heats are scheduled from approximately 9:20 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., followed by awards from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m.
The day also includes the Surf Dog Village, pet wellness activities, mobile pet adoptions and plenty of opportunities to cheer for extremely talented wet dogs.

Yes, These Dogs Really Surf
These are not dogs sitting on decorative boards for a quick photograph.
These dogs ride actual waves.
They compete individually, alongside other dogs and sometimes with their human partners. Judges consider how well they balance, how long they remain on the board and whether they perform any special moves while surfing.
Last year, thousands of people gathered at Pacifica State Beach to watch canine competitors—including Labradors, terriers, spaniels and French bulldogs—ride the waves in their life jackets.
Some crouch low.
Some stand proudly.
Some wear goggles.
All of them surf better than Bleep.
Bleep the Tattoo says: “I could surf. I simply choose not to participate in activities involving water, balance or personal growth.”
Celebrating Ten Years in Pacifica
The Pacifica World Dog Surfing Championships began in 2016, making this year the event’s 10th anniversary celebration.
The competition has grown into one of the Bay Area’s most wonderfully unusual traditions, drawing spectators and canine athletes from around California and beyond. No ticket is required to watch, although participating dogs must be registered.
But this event is about more than dogs doing something hilariously impressive.
It celebrates the trust between animals and the humans who love them.
The person reads the ocean.
The dog trusts the person.
The person trusts the dog.
And the Pacific Ocean agrees to absolutely nothing.
That is surfing.
Come Spend the Morning in Our Little Surf Town
Pacifica is one of those places you can drive through in the blink of an eye without realizing you have just passed a strange little coastal treasure.
We have fog, surfers, artists, musicians, fishermen, spectacular views and some of the coolest dogs in the world.
People come here from San Francisco, Silicon Valley and across the Bay Area when they need to cool off, breathe some ocean air and remember that life is still capable of being ridiculous and beautiful.
The dog surfing championships are the perfect excuse to come visit.

Your sense of humor
Even when the rest of California is melting, Linda Mar can be chilly and foggy. Dress in layers and hope the sun decides to make a celebrity appearance.
Make a Day of It
Pack your vehicle with goodies and enjoy breakfast or lunch by the beach.
There are several places to grab food within walking distance or a very short drive, including Taco Bell on the beach, the newly reopened La Playa in the Linda Mar Shopping Center, Nation’s Giant Hamburgers, Safeway and other neighborhood favorites.
Yes, Nation’s has pie.
This is important travel journalism.
After the competition, stay awhile. Walk the beach, explore Pacifica, visit nearby Rockaway Beach or simply sit beside the ocean and watch the waves.
Please follow all posted parking, beach and pet rules, keep dogs securely controlled and give the competitors plenty of room to prepare.
And please remember: not every dog wants to surf.
Some dogs are athletes.
Some dogs are healers.
Some dogs are professional blanket inspectors.
Every dog has a calling.

A few years ago, I wrote an original song in honor of Pacifica’s wave-riding canines called:

I am relaunching it for the 2026 championships because these dogs deserve their own anthem.
Actually, they deserve tour buses, dressing rooms and tiny bowls of imported spring water.
But we will begin with a song.
