A French Toast Sandwich Worth Getting Out of Bed For
Some recipes are for breakfast. Some recipes are for lunch. A Monte Cristo lives beautifully in between. Thick slices of custardy French toast cradle melted Gruyère cheese and delicate ham, then finish with a dusting of powdered sugar and a spoonful of berry jam.
The contrast is pure magic: savory, sweet, salty, creamy, and comforting all at once. Serve it with fresh berries, hot coffee, tea, or a celebratory glass of champagne, and suddenly an ordinary morning feels like a special occasion.

Prep Time
15 minutes
Cook Time
10–12 minutes
Ingredients
For the French Toast Custard
2 slices soft brioche bread
3 large eggs
½ cup milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon brown sugar
Pinch of salt
For the Filling
½ cup shredded Gruyère cheese
2–4 thin slices honey ham, prosciutto, or smoked ham
1 tablespoon butter
For Serving
Powdered sugar
Blackberry or raspberry jam
Fresh strawberries
Fresh blackberries
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Custard
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, brown sugar, and salt until smooth.
Place the brioche slices into the mixture and allow them to soak for about 15 minutes, turning occasionally so both sides absorb the rich custard.
Step 2: Cook the French Toast
Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat.
Add a small amount of butter and gently cook the soaked bread slices until golden brown on both sides and cooked through. The interior should remain soft and almost bread-pudding-like.
Step 3: Melt the Filling
Sprinkle Gruyère cheese onto one slice while still in the pan.
Add the thinly sliced ham and allow the warmth of the sandwich to gently melt the cheese.
Top with the second slice of French toast and let everything warm together for another minute.
Step 4: Finish and Serve
Transfer to a serving plate.
Dust generously with powdered sugar.
Serve with a spoonful of blackberry or raspberry jam and plenty of fresh berries alongside.
Cut diagonally and enjoy immediately while warm and melty.
Nomad Kitchen Notes
Gruyère gives the sandwich its classic French character, but Swiss cheese works beautifully too.
Raspberry jam is traditional, but blackberry preserves are absolutely delicious.
For entertaining, keep finished sandwiches warm on a baking sheet in a 200°F oven until ready to serve.
A glass of champagne transforms this into an unforgettable brunch.
Leftovers are surprisingly delicious served cold the next day.
